Meditations on a Bed of Nails

Spent the day pulling nails out of the newly denude kitchen floor...sitting on a milk crate, pliers, crowbar, mallet, and nail set all close at hand.  After a while it was almost like some painful form of meditation (like lying on a bed of nails...I bet that could make your back ache too).

Despite the back pain I do love the “deconstruction” part of rehabbing.  You see bits and pieces of the lives that were lived in the home over generations.  The pencil marks on the floor where someone mapped out where the doors would go, the wear patterns, the mystery spot under the stove where the flooring was replaced with painted boards from somewhere else, they’re all like a homeowner’s version of scrawling “Kilroy was here…” on a wall.  They let me know that I’m just one of many people who has cared for and worked on this home.  I hope that those who come after me feel the same.

I know how you are feeling about your old house, Ms Hill. The small bathroom off what is soon to be our dressing room had some buckled tiles (moss green plastic ones) that I thought I could just re-tile and move on. But NOoooo...
after pulling the scotch tape off (thats what was holding them in place) I found that the old plaster wall is crumbling away--I mean literally falling down!
We have come to the conclusion that we will have to remove ALL the tiles and ALL the plaster (at least on one wall--the biggest wall of course) and redo the walls with beadboard. More time and $$ than we wanted to spend, but at least the wall won't come tumbling down on someone minding their own business on the toliet one day....
and we will get to see a portion of the original skeleton of our 1915 home. FUN.

Finishing up the detail painting (you tape, you paint, you pull off the tape, and pull off some paint...), scraping the adhesive off of the floor (more on that in my next posting), oh, and one unsuccessful interview and some job hunting too...
