Ruminations on life, remodeling, art, and whatever else comes to me at 3 a.m.
About Me
- Name: Ginger
- Location: Great Lakes, United States
I am a (currently) unemployed jack of all trades; I've done database development for a major university, trade compliance monitoring for a stock brokerage, been a captain at a hotel, and a bartender at a private club. My new love is training and development - show me a system and I'll identify the problem areas, fix them, and train your staff to use the modified system. I've also rehabbed a 120 year old farmhouse, and am in the process of rehabbing a 100 year old victorian. I know more about drywalling, and Medicare law, than I ever wanted to. I'm using this period of unemployment to complete my degree in Health Information Administration and finish rehabbing my house - at this point I'm not sure which project I'll complete first...

you are AWSOME! great job -- I love what you are doing with your house. which room is next?
Well, right now I'm working on building a workshop in the garage so I can move all of the lumber/tools/etc. off of my back porch and get that area cleaned up.
My goal is to be done w/ the back porch in time for the June book club meeting...
Fantastic! I'm inspired to attempt acts of similar greatness. It has been delightful to read your blog thru-out the whole process. Please keep us in the loop regarding further projex!
Nice job.
Looks like you did the right thing at the right time.
I am being a little solipsistic here, but it seems my ceilings are a bit low too, certainly around here.
Dare I take a sabre saw to my ceiling and see if there is another, older ceiling a bit higher up?
Renovation can be a complicated process.
Ivan
Ivan, I think it depends on your level of curiousity, and whether you have access to the attic.
Once you open up that hole you may find an old ceiling beyond repair, wiring or pipes that you didn't realize were there until you cut them with the sawzall, or god knows what else (bats, mice, pygmies...).
If you can poke your head in the attic then you can measure from where the ceiling currently is to where the attic floor is and figure out if there are any "missing" inches, then dig under the insulation to get an idea of what condition it's in.
I've replaced ceilings before; it is absolutely no fun, and its death on your arms, shoulders and neck. Of course in the end you get something fabulous - you just have to decide if its worth it ;-)
Wow.
That's good information...I have been greatly impressed by the skill of the women at Home Depot here in the Toronto area. You been hiding one of your lights under a bushel. Illinois must be full of home depots and probably in dire need of skilled people who can not only do, but show.
Ivan
Thats funny Ivan, just this weekend another friend of mine was telling me to give Home Depot a shot (he said he thinks I'm the next Bob Villa, but better because I've got a nice rack...and I know he meant that in the nicest way possible ;-).
I'm going into town on Thurs for a job fair and figure I'll apply then.
You don't have to rely on your rack Ginger -- you have lots of great talents! Actually, I bet you'd love working in a retail/home improvement atmosphere.
Go for it girl. (but don't use the rack to get the job! PLEASE!!)
Once you land a job you love you can focus all your new-found positive energy into your ART!!! (remebmer your art?!)
